Friends and fans, I need your help.

As you may know, I have written my first novel and am in the process of getting it published. It’s a nostalgic story about love and career set in Boston in 1988. I’m hoping you’ll all read and/or listen to it!

Before we get to that point, have a problem that I need to solve and I’m requesting your assistance.

Here’s a symptom of the problem:

This was uploaded by a listener to Twitter. It’s a screenshot of my bio page on Hoopla (one of the services that lets listeners borrow digital audiobooks from public libraries). The photo is of author Karen White, who writes mysteries and women’s fiction while the words are about me. She I are often mixed up already on Twitter and Facebook. If I publish using the name Karen White, things will only get more confusing.

So, I’m going to change my name.

Just kidding. I’m going to adopt a pseudonym.

Here’s where you come in. Below is a list of names I’m considering. The first two are variations on my name (Mase is my husband’s last name.) The following six are combinations of roles I’ve played in Shakespeare’s plays and places I’ve lived and/or locations in Boston. (One main character in each book is a member of a fictional Shakespeare theater company not at all based on any of the companies I worked with in the 1980s in Boston, of course.)

K. E. White

Karen Mase

Elizabeth Charles

Celia Ratcliffe

Lucy Richmond

Diana Grey

Julia Lenox

Helena Somerville

I’ve checked that none of these names are already in use by other authors – you are welcome to suggest variations if you like but I can only consider them if they aren’t already taken.

In the comments below, please vote for your favorite. Or favorites, if you really can’t choose.

On my birthday, December 31, I will tally up the votes and make a decision. Everyone who has commented will be entered into a random drawing and the winner will get to name one of the characters in the first book – your name or one you make up.

Thanks for your help and Happy Holidays!

Update: K.E. White was a clear winner if I tally up the votes. While you all made some good arguments, pro and con, for choosing a name that connects to Karen White, I think keeping a connection to my real name will be more useful than trying to distance myself from the other author. I will have to figure out how I’ll be addressed when I go on those talk shows, though! 🙂

Thank you to you all for your thoughts and support. I will keep you posted as things develop. Happy New Year!

  1. Congratulations on the contest win for the book and good luck with your writing career, Karen. I admire the depths of your artistic creativity.

My vote is for Diana Grey.

K.E. White makes a lot of sense as it keeps continuity between your creative endeavors but I have to admit to a bias against using an author’s initials – probably a knee-jerk annoyance at how so many women had to do that with SF/Fantasy books in order to not be rejected out of hand by readers who wouldn’t pick up a Spec Fic novel written by a woman. Just my own quirk though.

  2. So excited for you! For your future success, of which I’m sure there will be plenty, need to have you stand out from this confusion. K with White seems pretty close. Pseudo far from that maddening crowd!!!
    Celia Charles
    Lucy Richmond

  3. K. E. White is my favorite. I wouldn’t be confused between you and the other Karen, who is one of my favorite authors. Thanks for doing this! And congratulations on your first book.

  4. K.E. White

  5. I’d choose K.E. White or Karen Mase

  6. K.E. White is my favorite but I think Karen Mase is a good 2nd choice. I love that you are asking your fans to help with this choice, The dog picture is hilarious 🙂

  7. K.E. White is my 1st choice but when on book tours and question and answer sessions…. and the inevitable Tonight Show appearance, what would they casually call you? K.E.? (I’m imagining Jimmy Fallon talking to you, “so K.E. what is your process….”) Not sure that when spoken “K.E.” rolls off the tongue but I love it for print.
I like Karen Mase. It would work for both print and interviews. I have to admit bias because I have a hard time picturing you as anyone but Karen, so the other names seemed wrong to me. All absolutely lovely names though.

  8. K. E. White

  9. K.E. White or Julia Lenox

  10. My favorite is K.E. White and my second favorite is Karen Mase. 🙂

  11. I’m liking KE White best – also, this is Melinda/AudioGals but I’m logged in on your blog as “auntrowena”. Do we need to bombard Hoopla with requests to put your photo with your bio??

    • Thanks for the offer, Melinda! The folks at Tantor/Highbridge contacted someone at Hoopla for me – hopefully it will be fixed soon.

  12. K.E. White
    So excited for you!

  13. KE White! Cheers –

  14. I like Julia Lenox. It stands out, is a bit regal yet easy to remember.

  15. I like K.E. White as your fans will have an easier time finding you with that choice.

  16. I like K. E. White.

  17. I vote for K. E. White or Diana Grey. Good luck with your forthcoming book!

    • Susan, you are the randomly selected winner! I’ll contact you via email to get your character name choice.

  18. I like Julia Lenox

  19. Elizabeth Charles! ❤ to you and yours!

  20. I like Lucy Richmond. What a conundrum! Good luck with your choice and your book! How exciting!
