From the Publisher:
“Special Ops soldier Griffin Reid doesn’t exactly have happy memories of growing up in Sunshine, Idaho. He’s only come back to recover from a war injury, and while he refuses to admit he’s in a weakened state, he finds comfort in the last person he’d expect. Kate Evans teaches fourth grade science in Sunshine, the place she’s always called home. Dreaming of graduate school and a happily-ever-after, she’s desperate to break out of the monotony of Sunshine. Luckily, a certain sexy man has just come back into her life. To Griffin, Kate as always been his little sister’s friend, but now he’s finding her to be so much more. As both attempt to forge their paths, they must decide if their passionate connection can turn into something lasting.”
From the Hot Listens Review:
“It’s not hard to see why Karen White keeps getting all these nominations. She’s excellent at bringing the mood of the novel to life; from a suspenseful scene to a happy, playful scenario, Karen White puts you there.
She’s lets the text dictate the tone of the story, and it would seem obvious, but I know some narrators that don’t do that. Her pace and timing are always on target. Her voice variations are smooth and never jarring. Her performances are skillfully edited; she sounds like she recorded the book in one sitting.
Another one of her strong suits and my favorite it’s the authenticity of her male voices; this is so important in a romance novel, probably more so than any other genre.
And lastly, she sounds like she’s enjoying the book by being 100% into the story, that helps transport the listener to the setting.”
From the AudioGals Review:
“Of course, Karen White’s narration is always a joy – her storytelling skills bring the book to life. She performs the characters well, with several seven-year-olds, an angsty teen, a couple of curmudgeonly dads as well as her fleshed out protagonists. She’s got the male register down to an art – she manages to make you believe her heroes have deep voices. She uses pacing as well as register to define her characters; she pitches her voice higher for Kate, with a slightly younger, more innocent sound, especially when she’s drinking at the rehearsal dinner and wedding reception. And she is consistent in her performance of each character, so it’s always clear who is talking.”
From The Book Nympho review:
“Karen White continues to work her narration magic with the people of Sunshine, Idaho. Karen really does have the right voice, timing and sass to bring these fun heroines and heroes to audio book lovers.”
My Recording Experience:
Kudos to Jill Shalvis for again putting a reference to audiobooks in one of her books! This one was adorable and had a great personal connection for me (hint, my youngest loves to disappear into books via her headphones, too). And speaking of kids, I loved the family dynamic of this book – heroine Kate is still very connected to her Dad and younger siblings, having helped raise them since her mother’s tragic death. Which sets up a bit of her conflict. Though her friends think of Kate as vulnerable, she’s the rock of her family and is truly emotionally courageous, allowing her to upend everyones’ expectations when she (literally) collides with heroic and badass (but wounded and on shaky ground) Griff. I hope you enjoy the roller coaster of their courtship as much as I did!
