THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES by Sue Monk Kidd

AVAILABLE FROM BOOKS ON TAPE (or from your Public Library – this was a Library edition)

“This fascinating novel is artistically performed by Karen White, whose scratchy voice is ideal for the 14-year-old Lily Owens. Through pacing, pitch, and just the right amount of tension in her delivery, White’s narration of the suspenseful and emotional path Lily undertakes in search of her mother’s past is tremendously engaging. The other characters of the story, from the terrifying T. Ray to the individual Boatwright sisters, are also fully voiced by White. The lush details of the novel also make listening deeply satisfying. From the descriptions of moonlight to the sounds of a beehive, the combination of the author’s prose and Karen White’s voice is outstanding.” R.F. “A Note On the Audio: The version I listened to (from the public library) was the Books on Tape version (though it was CDs), narrated by Karen White. The version that appears to be readily available on CD through both Amazon and Indiebound is different, narrated by Jenna Lamia – I’ve listened to a quick excerpt, and must say it would be worth the digging to find the Karen White version instead. Her voice is crisp and clear, easy to understand, never irritating or monotone. She captures the difference between Lily’s own narration and her recounting of other’s speech subtly, without imitating voices for each character, but it is enough to mark a difference between the two. Overall, an excellent recording – one I’m sad to see is not easier to find on the great wide interwebs.” from Entymology of a Bookworm blog, November 2010
